Det irländska femmannabandet Eitre skördar framgångar just nu. Publiken älskar dem, och pressen likaså. Gårdagens fullsatta konsert på Kulturmagasinet sålde slut redan i onsdags. Vissa hade åkt ända från Gävle för att se bandet. När Eitre fyllde lokalen med sin folkmusik förstod jag varför. Bandet är inte bara professionellt. De spelar som om instrumenten vore en förlängning av deras kroppar, och sjunger med en inlevelse av sällan skådat slag.

Eitre ist die erweiterte Version des skandinavischen Irish-Trad-Trios Quilty - bestehend aus Dag Westling (vocals, guitar, 5-str.-banjo), Esbjörn Hazelius (fiddle, voc.) und Frederik Bengtsson (double bass). Nun zum Quintett angewachsen bietet Eitre ein furioses Spektrum an Klängen klassischer Irish-Trad-Bands - ein oberflächlicher Höreindruck lässt sofort an Lunasa denken, die hier deutlich konzeptionell Pate gestanden haben! (Hörtipp: Track 5).
Mit Kevin Ryan (Manchester, UK) an der Flute und Marco Pollier (Frankreich) an den Uillean Pipes sind zwei ausgesprochen virtuose Musiker im Boot, die wesentlich zum High-End-Profil dieser europäischen Fusion beitragen. Marco Polliers polyrhythmisches Regulatorspiel, das bisweilen nach einer barocken Fuge klingt, sucht in der Welt der Uilleann Pipes seinesgleichen.

The Coming of Spring is a collection of mostly traditional songs and tune sets with straightforward acoustic arrangements. The group does a good job with simple but poignant arrangements of the emigration ballad "Brackagh Hill" and the lover´s lament "The Flower of Magherally", and lightens things up with the happier stories of the return of "William Taylor" and memories of the "Flat River Girl", the latter featuring an unusual combination of banjo and uillean pipes. Marco Pollier´s resonant pipes, along with Kevin Ryan´s flute and Esbjörn Hazelius´s fiddle, also energize the tune sets, like the "Fairy Reel" set that leads the disc.

Eitre are another proof of the great popularity of and quality of Irish music in Sweden. Eitre combine two Irish musicians (singer and guitarist Dag Westling and flautist Kevin Ryan), two Swedish musicians from the band Quilty (on fiddle/cittern/uilleann pipes/whistle) and a Swedish double bass player. Both choice of material and interpretation of the traditional Irish (and some Scottish) music is overall more on the safe side, but always of high quality, with both good playing and singing. Swedish-Irish folk at its best!
